Credit Card Providers
"one or many may be used with a Nine9Design
e-commerce website"
A Credit card provider or payment gateway are an e-commerce
service that authorises payments for e-commerce websites.
The process is typically broken into two sections, the shopping
cart which is located on the e-commerce website and the payment
gateway service.
Items selected for purchase are located in a logical cart that
upon checkout is forwarded to the payment gateway that takes the
credit card payment and returns the customer back to the
originating site.
The main big UK players in this market are:
- Sagepay
- Worldpay
- Google Checkout
- Paypal
and one or many may be used with a Nine9Design e-commerce
website. Typically these providers issue an API (application
programming interface) that allows a developer to interface
directly with the gateway provider secured authentication
processes.
Many of these payment gateways offer styling facilities so that
when your customer completes the checkout the payment gateway
website is styled similar to the originating site. This gives the
impression you have not left the originating site. This feature can
be a considerable boon if implemented properly.
